About the study
The Lane Avenue Parking Study is a Knowlton School of Architecture (The Ohio State University) study of parking along Lane Avenue in Upper Arlington. This map covers one of its six focus areas, the Shops on Lane lots, with every car counted from overhead drone photos.
Focus areas
- Gateway garage
- OhioHealth overflow lot
- Lane Avenue on-street parking
- Shops on Lane lots
- The Lane development
- Westmont at the Lane development*
*Including Ted Staton Way & Marriott surface lot
Method
Each section is observed six times — morning, afternoon and evening, on weekdays and weekends, including a home football game day — in person or by drone. Drone flights are stitched with photogrammetry and tied to Ohio’s 2025 aerial imagery; cars are detected automatically and every uncertain one is checked by eye.
Weather is from the Ohio State University Airport (KOSU) observations, about 3 miles away: temperature interpolated between the hourly reports either side of each flight, sky from the nearest report, and any rain that ended in the 3 hours before (wet pavement makes dark cars harder to see).
Occupancy is cars counted ÷ marked spaces. Map position is within about 0.3 m of Ohio’s 2025 imagery and of the other surveys, about 1 m absolute.
Add a new survey
- Fly the lot taking straight-down photos in an overlapping grid, about the same height as before (roughly 350–400 ft).
- Copy the photos to a folder on your Mac, for example
~/Downloads/Lane Oct 3. - Open Claude Code in any chat and say: Add a new Lane Ave survey from ~/Downloads/Lane Oct 3
Claude builds the drone map with photogrammetry (lens distortion removed, each photo placed in 3D and orthorectified) and ties it to Ohio’s 2025 aerial imagery, balances and brightens it, counts the cars, checks the uncertain ones, carries over the parking spots, and adds a new tab here with its date and time.
Saved edits on any tab are kept when new surveys are added.
